Nellie Oehler, a dedicated volunteer with over 50 years of service to Oregon’s 4-H Youth Development Program, was honored as Oregon’s 2017 inductee into the National 4-H Hall of Fame. Known for her passion for working with youth, Oehler has led livestock and consumer science clubs, served on advisory committees, and volunteered extensively at fairs and camps. She pioneered one of Oregon’s first 4-H programs for adults with developmental disabilities, teaching essential life skills to support independent living, and earned the affectionate title “Dorm Mom” for managing housing and mentorship at the Oregon State Fair for over two decades.
Oehler’s contributions extend beyond youth leadership; she co-founded Oregon’s Master Food Preserver program, developed educational food safety content, and supported Extension’s statewide food safety hotline. A former 4-H agent and foods and nutrition specialist, she also taught home economics and coordinated leadership development programs. Her lifelong commitment to 4-H and community education earned her recognition at the National 4-H Hall of Fame ceremony, where she received a medallion, plaque, and memory book celebrating her impactful career.
