Sherbert, a critically neglected Shetland pony rescued in 2022 from one of the worst animal abuse cases in Cornwall, has found a loving new home after extensive rehabilitation at the Mare and Foal Sanctuary in Devon. Sherbert was among 13 animals rescued from Sarah and James Baker’s care, where they suffered severe neglect including emaciation, untreated wounds, and poor living conditions. The Bakers, who ran a charity and were previously warned about animal welfare failings, were prosecuted and received suspended prison sentences along with lifetime bans on keeping animals.
Despite the Bakers’ neglect, Sherbert has thrived in her new home in south Wales with Christina, who was moved by Sherbert’s story and now provides her with a safe and loving environment. The rescue and rehoming efforts highlight the importance of ongoing care and support for abused animals, although not all rescued animals survived, as another pony named Poppy died despite sanctuary efforts. The case underscores the severe consequences of animal neglect and the vital role of organizations like the RSPCA and the Mare and Foal Sanctuary in rescuing and rehabilitating vulnerable animals.
