NC State Veterinary Students Gain Hands-On Experience in Italy Through Doctors in Italy Fellowship Program

Three aspiring veterinarians from NC State University—Isabella Miccoli, Katie Cortese, and Elena Hill—participated in the Doctors in Italy Fellowship Program over the summer, gaining hands-on clinical experience in Rome and Florence. Miccoli and Cortese worked at animal sanctuaries in Rome, assisting with a variety of domestic and wild animals and observing emergency and exotic veterinary procedures, including unique surgeries not commonly seen in the U.S. Hill, based in Florence, focused on equine care and farm animal health, helping with horses and other livestock while exploring her interests in different veterinary fields.

The immersive program not only enhanced their veterinary skills but also allowed them to experience Italian culture firsthand, visiting historic sites and engaging in local traditions. The students emphasized how the international exposure complemented their academic and practical training at NC State, broadening their perspectives and strengthening their veterinary school applications. They encourage other students interested in veterinary science to pursue similar study abroad opportunities, highlighting the profound personal and professional growth such experiences offer.
