Nassau County Approves New Beach Use Rules and Wildlife Protections to Safeguard Sea Turtle Nesting Areas

Nassau County has unanimously approved new beach use and wildlife protection rules through Ordinance 2025-037 and Resolution 2025-132, which implement the Protected Species Management Plan (PSMP). These updates consolidate regulations on primitive camping, horseback riding, and beach driving, with a strong focus on protecting sea turtle nesting areas and sensitive habitats. Key changes include restricting primitive camping to Burney Park’s parking area, aligning horseback riding rules with neighboring counties, and introducing stricter vehicle access limits and environmental buffers during turtle nesting season. The PSMP also mandates daily removal of horse hoof ruts near nests and enhances enforcement with gated access and educational outreach.

The ordinance responds to concerns raised by conservation groups about vehicle damage to turtle nests and incorporates public feedback and expert recommendations. Notably, driving hours during nesting season are adjusted, and a 10-foot buffer zone around nests is established to reduce disturbances. Enhanced security measures at vehicle access points and expanded public education efforts aim to better protect the increasing populations of green and loggerhead turtles. These rules take effect immediately, with enforcement and education planned ahead of the May 2026 nesting season.
