Ratoath musician Shane O’Neill has embarked on a weight loss challenge to raise funds for the Leinster Horse and Pony Rescue and the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund, two charities close to his heart due to his background in horse racing and care. With support from nutrition and fitness professionals, Shane is adopting a structured, healthy approach to weight loss, aiming to dispel myths about unhealthy weight management in the racing industry. Since starting, he has already lost significant weight and plans to reach a target of around 13 stone.
Shane’s fundraising effort also aims to raise awareness about safe, long-term weight management while supporting vital work for neglected horses and injured jockeys. Donations have been steadily coming in from online supporters and gig audiences, with a celebratory weigh-in and cheque presentation planned for July. Adding a light-hearted twist, Shane has promised a humorous forfeit—dressing as the Naked Cowboy for a gig—if he fails to meet his goal, underscoring his commitment to making a meaningful difference for the charities.
