Over a span of just five days at Ellis, numerous horses were scratched or had their claims voided due to health issues, highlighting significant welfare concerns in horseracing. Seven horses were scratched by the regulatory vet for being deemed “unsound,” while many others were withdrawn by private vets due to illness or injury. Additionally, several horses finished races physically compromised, leading to the voiding of their sales claims, including three in a single race on July 12.
Further incidents reported by stewards included a horse injured in the paddock, another suffering post-race heatstroke, and one returning lame requiring ambulance care. These events underscore the harsh realities and risks inherent in the sport, reflecting ongoing challenges related to horse health and safety in racing.
