Last month, a multi-agency rescue operation led by The Donkey Sanctuary successfully relocated six mules and two ponies from an exposed hillside in South Wales to safety. The animals, whose owner had died, were living in harsh conditions with minimal shelter, and one mule required urgent veterinary care due to severely overgrown hooves. The rescue involved collaboration between The Donkey Sanctuary, Lluest Horse and Pony Trust, The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, Redwings, and World Horse Welfare, utilizing specialist handling equipment and expert teams to ensure a safe and low-stress transfer.
Now housed at the Lluest Horse and Pony Trust, the mules and ponies are receiving immediate veterinary treatment and behavioral support. The Donkey Sanctuary will continue to provide advice throughout their rehabilitation. This operation highlights the importance of cooperation among equine welfare organizations, demonstrating how shared resources and expertise can effectively address urgent animal welfare needs and secure positive outcomes for vulnerable equines.
