Multi-Agency Rescue Operation Saves Mules and Ponies Left Exposed After Owner’s Death

A multi-agency rescue operation was launched in rural south Wales just before Christmas to save six mules and two ponies left exposed on a windswept hillside following their owner’s death. Led by The Donkey Sanctuary and supported by several equine welfare charities including Lluest Horse and Pony Trust, The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, Redwings, and World Horse Welfare, the team overcame challenging terrain and the animals’ unhandled nature to safely transport them to shelter. The animals, suffering from harsh winter conditions and urgent health issues like severely overgrown hooves, are now receiving veterinary care and rehabilitation.

The operation highlighted the critical importance of collaboration within the equine welfare sector, with shared resources and expertise enabling a swift and effective response. Welfare leaders emphasized the professionalism and compassion of all involved, noting that the rescue exemplifies the positive impact of joint efforts to protect vulnerable animals, especially during the festive season.
