Mounted Police Engage Community to Promote Road Safety Around Horses

The mounted police unit has received a very positive response from the public, with many people appreciating the opportunity to see the horses and learn from officers about their role in the community. Officers have engaged with hundreds of motorists to educate them on how to safely share the road with horses, emphasizing the need to slow down to 10mph, maintain a two-metre distance when overtaking, and follow mounted officers’ instructions.

Sgt Hadley noted that many local drivers are not accustomed to encountering horses on the road, so the unit prioritizes education and engagement to promote safety. However, they remain prepared to enforce the law if drivers compromise safety. Additionally, the unit has collaborated with bus companies and council vehicle drivers to further reinforce safety protocols around horses.
