The Pass Wide and Slow campaign, held on September 14 at Norton’s Home Estates, aimed to promote horse riding safety and awareness on the roads. The event, known as Ride 235 and starting at Fifth Avenue Equestrian in High Road, was largely successful and well supported by the community and motorists. However, the ride was marred by an incident where a motorist revved his engine, spooking several horses and causing one rider to fall and sustain injuries. Organizers emphasized that such behavior highlights the urgent need for motorists to show greater respect and patience around horses, as they are easily startled and vulnerable to accidents.
The campaign, celebrated globally, encourages motorists to slow down and give horses a wide berth when passing, whether traveling in the same or opposite direction. Ward 24 Councillor Nicola da Silva noted that while most motorists were cautious, the reckless actions of a few can lead to serious harm. The event serves as a reminder of the importance of mutual respect on the roads to ensure the safety of both riders and horses.
