Motor Vehicle Drivers at Fault in Nearly Half of Horse-and-Buggy Crashes, Study Finds

A study published in The Journal of Plain Anabaptist Communities found that nearly half of all crashes involving horse-drawn buggies in Lancaster County are caused by motor vehicle drivers, often due to impairment, speeding, phone use, or general errors. Most crashes occur when buggies are rear-ended, highlighting the dangers of tailgating and aggressive driving near these slow-moving, unprotected vehicles. The study also revealed that crashes involving buggies result in serious injuries or fatalities at rates far exceeding those of motor vehicle-only crashes, underscoring the need for greater driver attentiveness and caution.

The researchers emphasize the importance of educating both motor vehicle drivers—especially tourists unfamiliar with buggy traffic—and Amish communities about road safety. While efforts by the Pennsylvania Amish Safety Committee and PennDOT exist, more comprehensive measures are needed, including better regulations and licensing for buggy drivers and safety measures for children in buggies. The editorial calls for mutual respect and coexistence on the roads, urging drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, and maintain safe distances to protect all road users.
