Monmouth Park Racing Date Reduction Bill Hits Roadblock in New Jersey Senate

The future of Monmouth Park racing faced a setback as the New Jersey Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee chose not to vote on Senate Bill 5028, which would have allowed the track to reduce its annual racing meet to 25 days. Similarly, the State Assembly committee also refrained from voting on a comparable bill. This potential reduction is linked to the possible loss of a $10 million annual purse supplement that Monmouth Park has received since 2019, prompting concerns about the viability of maintaining a full racing schedule.

The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey expressed relief at the bill’s removal from the agenda but remains cautious about future legislative sessions. They emphasize the importance of a robust racing calendar to encourage breeding in the state and are committed to collaborating with horsemen, track management, and other stakeholders to support and strengthen New Jersey’s equine industry. Despite concerns over the bill’s language, the association believes that compromise is possible to ensure the long-term health of Thoroughbred racing at Monmouth Park.
