Missoula County is beginning to address concerns about the feral horses that have long roamed the Upper Miller Creek area, often seen grazing in yards and walking down sidewalks. This herd is unique in Montana because it freely roams residential neighborhoods and parks, and at least three foals were born this summer. However, there is uncertainty about which state agency, if any, has jurisdiction over managing these horses. The community is divided, with some residents appreciating the horses’ presence while others worry about safety risks, especially after at least one horse was killed by a vehicle.
To find a way forward, Missoula County plans to convene experts in land and livestock management, ecology, and law enforcement to explore possible solutions. Early next year, the public will have the opportunity to provide input on proposed ideas, ensuring community voices are part of the decision-making process. Residents interested in contributing can participate through an online platform set up by the county.
