Horses rescued from a Suffolk farm after a severe neglect investigation were given little chance of survival, with some found in near-death conditions, including a 31-year-old horse named Gandalf who initially scored 1 out of 10 in health. Virginia Beach rescue group Circle A Home for Horses took in 18 of these horses, describing the scene as horrific and unprecedented in their two decades of experience. Despite the grim start, the rescue team dedicated months of intensive care, working long hours to nurse the horses back to health, ultimately seeing them recover and regain their spirit.
The owners, William Shelton and Janet Aston, were arrested and face 96 indictments each related to animal neglect. While legal proceedings continue, Circle A Home for Horses is collaborating with Suffolk law enforcement to rescue additional horses from the defendants’ properties before winter arrives. The rescue team highlights the horses’ remarkable perseverance and recovery as a testament to their commitment and the horses’ will to live.
