Two ponies, Kate and Ruby, were found in dire condition at Last Chance Horse & Pony Rescue & Sanctuary, highlighting the ongoing need for support for unwanted and neglected animals. To aid the rescue, the Community Initiative for Animal Rescue held a two-day fundraiser in Niagara-on-the-Lake, raising $6,000 through sales of floral arrangements, baked goods, and handmade items. The event featured therapy miniature horses from Last Chance, which regularly visit hospitals and senior homes, bringing joy to many and underscoring the rescue’s important community role.
The fundraiser was especially timely as Last Chance faced financial challenges after winter-related setbacks, including frozen barn pipes that canceled a key revenue event. The rescue, which has grown from caring for eight to 40 animals, continues to receive numerous calls for help, reflecting a broader issue of horses being discarded or sent to slaughter after their working lives. Organizers encourage ongoing support through donations and volunteering, emphasizing that humane societies rely heavily on community contributions rather than government funding.
