Cat Rafanello, a lifelong horse enthusiast from Minden, Louisiana, is preparing to participate in the 2027 Gaucho Derby, a grueling 310-mile endurance horse race through the Patagonian wilderness in Chile. Having transitioned from hunter-jumper competitions to endurance riding, Rafanello was drawn to the Derby after hearing about it on a podcast and was surprised to be selected for this prestigious international event. The race challenges riders to navigate difficult terrain while riding a different horse each day, chosen by lottery, with strict rules on weight limits and route adherence.
The Gaucho Derby is known as one of the toughest tests of horsemanship, taking place in remote, rugged conditions without modern camping comforts. Rafanello embraces the adventure not for trophies but for the experience, camaraderie, and personal fulfillment. She is currently raising funds via GoFundMe to support her journey and hopes to inspire others with her passion for endurance riding and exploration.
