Cat Rafanello, a Minden resident and active-duty U.S. Air Force member, is preparing to compete in the 2027 Gaucho Derby, a grueling 10-day, 310-mile endurance race through Argentina’s Patagonian wilderness. Having moved to Minden in 2022 with her family and animals, Rafanello balances military service, pre-veterinary studies, and rigorous training for this extreme equestrian event that tests horsemanship, navigation, and survival skills. Her deep connection to horses, shaped by past experiences retraining a difficult horse and her goal to become a large-animal veterinarian, drives her dedication to horse welfare and endurance racing.
Despite the challenges of managing time and training while serving full-time, Rafanello embraces the mental discipline fostered by her Air Force career and values the community and connection the race offers. She views success not by placement but by the bonds formed with horses, fellow riders, and the natural environment. To support her journey, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched, reflecting strong community interest. Rafanello encourages others to seize opportunities that inspire passion and growth, embodying her motto to “take those opportunities” when they arise.
