Milton has enacted a new ordinance banning fireworks within 200 yards of any property housing horses, donkeys, ponies, or mules, effective July 1st, just before Independence Day. This law aims to protect equines from the dangers posed by fireworks, such as panic-induced injuries and fire hazards in hay-filled barns. Previously, state law prevented cities from restricting fireworks on major holidays, but House Bill 614, championed by local officials and signed by Governor Brian Kemp, now empowers cities to establish such protections.
The city encourages residents to report violations and will provide free warning signs to property owners with equines. While fireworks can still be legally ignited beyond the 200-yard limit, the rule focuses on the location of ignition rather than explosion. Police will prioritize education during the initial enforcement phase to raise awareness about the new regulations and safeguard the welfare of horses and similar animals in the community.
