Michelle Payne Thanks Fans and Racing Industry After Sister’s Death

Melbourne Cup legend Michelle Payne expressed gratitude for the support received from fans and the racing industry following the death of her sister Bernadette, a former jockey who passed away at the age of 51. Michelle shared the news after completing an International Women’s Day photoshoot and thanked everyone for their love and understanding during this difficult time.

The Payne family, including Michelle and brother Patrick, came together amid the grief to race Smokin’ Princess, a horse trained by the siblings, who finished fourth in the Matron Stakes at Flemington. Michelle, who retired from racing last year to focus on training, paid tribute to Bernadette on social media and remembered her with a reel of photos and memories.

Bernadette, who retired in 2009 after a successful jockey career, was loved by many and had a challenging time in recent years. The Payne family announced her death in a statement issued by Racing Victoria, asking for privacy and expressing hope that she is now at peace. Michelle reflected on Bernadette’s role in her life, highlighting her strength and support during difficult times.
