Michael W. Bowker, also known by his Lakota name Spotted Horse Man, passed away on October 2, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on October 14, 1948, in South Dakota, he was raised by his father after his mother’s early passing. Michael was a welder by training and served as a police officer for Cheyenne River Law Enforcement. Deeply rooted in his Lakota heritage, he was a descendant of notable chiefs and was active in his community for over 30 years, holding various leadership roles including District 6 Chairman and school board member. He was also a devout member of the UCC Congregational Church and engaged in sports like baseball and basketball.
Michael married twice, fathering six children and adopting another, and was known for his generosity in opening his home to those in need. He is survived by his wife Patricia, children, grandchildren, and many extended family members and friends. His funeral was held on October 10, 2025, in LaPlant, South Dakota, with burial at the Congregational Cemetery. Michael’s legacy is marked by his dedication to family, community service, and cultural heritage.
