The Morgan horse, the first breed developed in the United States dating back to the late 1700s, is celebrated as a true symbol of American heritage due to its versatility in work, warfare, and racing. Descended from a single stallion named Figure, Morgans are known for their strength, endurance, and gentle temperament, traits that made them invaluable during the Civil War and beyond. The Ozarks Morgan Horse Club is hosting a “Meet the Morgan Horse” event on April 25 at Springfield’s Pinegar arena, showcasing a variety of Morgan horses including ranch, trail, jumping, and show horses, along with interactive activities like side saddle rides and hand painting.
Sonja McDanel, president of the club and lifelong Morgan horse breeder, emphasizes the breed’s unique qualities and the dedication required to preserve their legacy. The event aims to offer an accessible and engaging experience for attendees to connect with these horses, learn about their care, and appreciate their historical significance. Additional highlights include a workshop on horse ownership and a book giveaway honoring Laura Ingalls Wilder, whose husband famously raised Morgans. The event underscores the breeders’ pride in maintaining a distinct American tradition embodied by the Morgan horse.
