Meet Eileen Shanahan and the Warrior Ranch Foundation Helping Veterans and Rescue Horses

Eileen Shanahan is the founder and president of the Warrior Ranch Foundation, a Calverton-based nonprofit dedicated to helping veterans and first responders through equine-assisted therapy and ranch work. The foundation rescues and rehabilitates horses, providing therapeutic activities such as grooming, feeding, and ground exercises that foster bonds between the animals and participants. Shanahan emphasizes the healing power of horses, hard work, and camaraderie, noting that many veterans relate to injured rescue horses like Sully, the ranch’s ambassador. The ranch also teaches practical ranching skills, offering a sense of purpose and community to those who have served.

Established in 2016, the Warrior Ranch Foundation transformed an abandoned property into a thriving ranch with the help of donations and volunteers. It currently supports over 500 veterans and first responders across Long Island, providing all services free of charge. The foundation aims to expand operations to seven days a week and increase staff to better serve its community. Through its work, the ranch not only rehabilitates horses but also helps participants manage symptoms of PTSD and rebuild confidence, making it a unique sanctuary for both animals and humans.
