Max Comley, standing 6ft 5in and unable to continue as a jockey due to weight challenges, has found success as a racehorse trainer. Since obtaining his full training license in late 2024, Comley has enjoyed a breakthrough season with 13 winners and over £110,000 in prize money. His standout horse, Manganese, remains unbeaten after recently winning the Listed Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Fillies’ Juvenile Hurdle at Doncaster, narrowly defeating a strong rival from Nicky Henderson’s stable. Comley, who grew up in Cheltenham, is now aiming for the 2026 Cheltenham Festival with Manganese, who is entered in both the Triumph Hurdle and the mares’ novice race.
Despite Manganese showing little at home, she has demonstrated determination and racing intelligence on the track, impressing jockey David Bass and the wider racing community. Bass praised Comley’s training operation and highlighted the horse’s cleverness and fighting spirit during races. Comley expressed excitement about the future, emphasizing the importance of horses like Manganese in raising the profile of his Wiltshire-based yard and helping him establish himself in the competitive training ranks.
