Racing is set to return to the historic Champ de Mars racecourse in Mauritius with a four-race ‘mock meeting’ scheduled for Saturday, ahead of the official season restart on August 2. The Champ de Mars, which has hosted racing for over 200 years, is now under the sole management of the MTC Jockey Club Ltd. The dry run will test all race-day operations, including starting procedures, timing systems, and steward coordination. With 89 horses arriving for the new season, the relaunch aims to preserve Mauritius’s rich horse racing heritage and enhance the experience for participants and spectators alike.
The revival is supported by Australian company Racing and Sports Pty Ltd, which has developed a comprehensive database covering all registered thoroughbreds, trainers, jockeys, and other key stakeholders. The MTCJC website has also been revamped to provide detailed race information and coverage. Brazilian jockey Manuel Nunes has committed to riding in Mauritius for the season, highlighting the international interest in the relaunch. Both MTCJC and Racing and Sports emphasize their goal of elevating Mauritian racing to a global stage through this collaborative effort.
