Law enforcement agencies in Thurston County seized hundreds of roosters bred for fighting during a search warrant execution in Yelm. The roosters were found in enclosures not consistent with typical backyard flocks, along with neglected livestock animals. The sheriff’s office received information about possible animal cruelty from the Hooved Animal Rescue of Thurston County.
Flyovers and a search of the property revealed hundreds of roosters, some of which were mutilated, along with other neglected animals including horses, cows, and goats. Four people were detained during the search, and cockfighting devices were found in the home on the property. The individuals have not been officially charged yet, and a decision is expected by February 18.
Authorities are focusing on rehabilitating and rehoming the rescued birds, with plans to place them with interested families or farms in the area. Joint Animal Services is seeking donations to support the care of the rescued animals, including chicken feed, straw, pine shavings, and monetary contributions.
