Mass Protests Resume in Jakarta with Students and Labor Groups Demanding Government Reforms

On September 4, 2025, multiple protests are planned in Jakarta by various groups including the All-Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM SI) at the House of Representatives (DPR) building and the Labor Movement with the People (GEBRAK) near the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue. The police will deploy over 2,100 personnel to secure the demonstrations, urging orderly conduct. The protesters demand the government and DPR enact the Asset Seizure Law, reduce taxes and basic commodity prices, stop repression against demonstrators, release detained protesters, audit state enterprises, and reform the cabinet.

These protests follow a wave of unrest that began on August 25, 2025, which escalated after a fatal incident involving a police vehicle and an online motorcycle taxi driver, sparking widespread anger and violent clashes. The demonstrations have resulted in at least 10 deaths, over 3,000 injuries, and more than a thousand arrests, with significant damage to police and government buildings. Both BEM SI and GEBRAK emphasize the need for the government, led by President Prabowo Subianto, to respond promptly to their demands as a sign of commitment to the people’s welfare.
