Maryland’s Gentle Giants Horse Rescue Saves Over 30 Neglected Horses from Vermont

Gentle Giants Horse Rescue, based in Mount Airy, Maryland, specializes in rescuing draft horses—large breeds like Clydesdales and Percherons—from neglectful situations across the United States. Recently, the farm took in over 30 Friesian horses from Vermont that were part of an animal cruelty investigation by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. These horses arrived severely underweight and suffering from open sores, requiring intensive medical care in the farm’s specialized Wellness Barn. The rescue is uniquely equipped to handle a large number of stallions, which require individual turnout and specialized care.

Currently housing 221 horses, Gentle Giants relies heavily on volunteers and donations to provide ongoing care, feeding, and veterinary treatment. They offer hands-on volunteer opportunities for people of all experience levels, emphasizing the importance of socialization and daily care for the horses. The organization encourages community support to sustain their mission of rescuing and rehabilitating these gentle giants.
