Mary’s lifelong passion for horses led her to adopt M G Junior, an off-track Thoroughbred (OTTB), through CANTER Michigan during the COVID-19 pandemic. After researching Thoroughbred retraining and connecting with the rescue organization, Mary found an immediate bond with Junior, a 2011 gelding with a successful racing history. Their personalities matched perfectly, and Junior quickly adapted to trail and arena riding, requiring minimal retraining.
Now, Mary and Junior enjoy a relaxed lifestyle focused on groundwork and liberty exercises, deepening their connection. Mary cherishes their companionship and aims to provide Junior with a happy, low-key life. This story highlights the success of aftercare programs like CANTER and the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, which facilitate the rehabilitation and adoption of retired racehorses into new, fulfilling roles.
