Mark Chitty, managing director of Haunui Farm in Karaka, oversees a professional thoroughbred breeding operation that has evolved since relocating from Whitford in 2009. The farm functions as a “hotel for horses,” managing around 220 mares annually during the busy breeding and foaling season from August to early February. Haunui Farm adheres to international stud regulations requiring natural breeding methods, and serves clients locally and internationally. Mark, a third-generation breeder and equine veterinarian, emphasizes the rewarding challenges of stud management, particularly in equine reproduction and foal health.
Haunui Farm, founded in 1955 by Mark’s grandparents, has a rich legacy highlighted by notable horses like Foxona and Group 1 winners such as Fun on the Run. During National Thoroughbred Week, the farm showcased its bloodstock, including descendants of Foxona and the dam of Melody Belle, New Zealand’s most successful Group 1 winner. The farm’s open day offered insights into breeding processes beyond racing and gambling, reflecting the deep heritage and ongoing commitment to producing quality racehorses.
