Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse achieved a milestone with his 4,000th career win when It’s Witchcraft narrowly defeated the favorite Ambaya in a $72,000 allowance race at Colonial Downs. Casse, who began training at age 17 and is based in Ocala, Florida, expressed amazement at the achievement, joking about the many losses along the way and hinting at retirement only after reaching 5,000 or even 6,000 wins. His career highlights include multiple Sovereign Awards, training six Canadian Horses of the Year, and victories in major races such as the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
Casse’s legacy extends through numerous graded stakes winners and Breeders’ Cup champions, including Tepin and World Approval, both Eclipse Award recipients. Coming from a prominent racing family, with his late father Norman Casse a key figure in Ocala’s breeding industry, Mark Casse continues to lead in Woodbine’s trainer standings and contributes actively to the sport’s community, including past service on the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association board.
