Sheriff Jerry Sheridan of Maricopa County has intensified efforts against animal abuse by revamping the sheriff’s office Animal Crimes Unit and dedicating more resources to investigating and prosecuting neglect cases. This comes amid a rise in animal abuse incidents, highlighted by a recent rescue in Rio Verde where over 50 exotic animals—including horses, camels, goats, peacocks, and a zebra—were found malnourished and without access to food or water in extreme heat. The animals are now receiving veterinary care, and the sheriff’s office is seeking legal custody to ensure their protection and eventual adoption.
The county attorney’s office is also expanding its focus on animal welfare, adding two prosecutors to handle the increasing caseload, which is expected to nearly double in 2025. Sheriff Sheridan and County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasize that animal victims deserve justice and that the county is committed to swift, decisive action against cruelty. Investigations remain ongoing, with the Rio Verde property owner yet to be charged.
