Mare and Foal Sanctuary Launches Christmas Appeal After Rescuing Severely Neglected Arab Colt Bourbon

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary has launched a Christmas appeal following the rescue of Bourbon, a severely underweight two-year-old Arab colt found in poor conditions in Cornwall. Bourbon suffered from impaired liver function and other health issues due to neglect and inadequate grazing. Despite his fragile state, he has shown a gentle temperament and is now receiving expert care at the Sanctuary, where staff hope for his gradual recovery. His case highlights a broader equine welfare crisis in England and Wales, with many horses facing poor living conditions, lack of proper care, and rising neglect due to financial pressures on owners.

The Sanctuary, one of the UK’s largest equine welfare charities, warns that worsening economic and weather conditions this winter may increase the number of horses in need. They emphasize the importance of public support to continue rescuing and rehabilitating horses like Bourbon. The charity calls for donations to help provide ongoing care and prevent further suffering, underscoring that many horses still face hardship and require urgent assistance.
