On July 8, an adult male affiliated with Utah State University was injured in a horse accident about 1.5 miles north of Beaver Lake during a survey project. The horse lost balance going down a decline, causing the man to fall and be pinned underneath as the horse fell on him. Emergency responders were contacted via satellite phone, and the Utah Department of Public Safety dispatched a helicopter to airlift the man to a Salt Lake City hospital. His injuries included broken ribs and deep bruising but were non-life threatening, and he was reported to be recovering well. The horse was unharmed and walked away on its own.
Summit County Search and Rescue supported the operation by refueling the DPS helicopter using their mobile fuel trailer, a resource kept ready to extend helicopter search and rescue missions in backcountry areas. Although the volunteers did not attend the accident site, their fuel trailer stationed in Kamas enabled the helicopter to remain operational and return safely to base.
