Kevin Roper from Axbridge, Somerset, has been banned from keeping horses for seven years after the RSPCA found his three cob-type horses severely underweight and in urgent need of care. An investigation revealed the horses, two of which were pregnant, had protruding bones and appeared lethargic, prompting their rescue and recovery at the Bristol charity HorseWorld. Despite Roper’s claim that he loved his horses and was unaware of their condition, he admitted to an animal welfare offence and was fined during sentencing at North Somerset Magistrates’ Court.
The RSPCA inspector who visited the horses described seeing visible ribs, spine, and hip bones despite their coats, highlighting the severity of neglect. Two of the rescued pregnant horses have since given birth to healthy foals, showing signs of recovery under proper care. The case underscores the importance of timely intervention in animal welfare to prevent suffering and ensure proper treatment.
