Malaysia’s equestrian team is gearing up for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Thailand this December, aiming to end a medal drought since 2017. The recent Prime Minister Cup CSI 1* served as the fourth of five qualifying rounds, featuring around 100 riders competing for spots on the national team. Nineteen-year-old Hariz Kamaluddin emerged as the champion with his horse Replay, completing both rounds fault-free, while seasoned rider Norinne Dewal Ira Ali, balancing her roles as a mother, lawyer, and equestrian, secured second place with her horse Pavalina. Other notable competitors included Nabil Ismail and Amirul Razak, with several riders close to qualifying based on accumulated points.
The qualifiers have showcased intense competition and the deep passion of Malaysia’s riders, many of whom have long-standing connections to the sport. Hariz’s journey began through his brother’s therapeutic riding, and Norinne’s equestrian roots trace back to childhood, emphasizing her love and care for horses beyond competition. With one final qualifying round remaining, anticipation builds as the nation awaits the final team selection to represent Malaysia at the SEA Games, hoping to reclaim their standing in regional equestrian sports.
