The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals (MSSPA), along with other New England rescues, is caring for 11 horses rescued from severe neglect at a farm in Melrose, New York. The horses, including one named Gibson, were found standing in stalls filled with five to six feet of manure, suffering from years of mistreatment. MSSPA, Dorset Equine Rescue in Vermont, and Tomten Farm and Sanctuary in New Hampshire are now providing these horses with medical care, specialized diets, and a safe environment to help them recover physically and emotionally.
The recovery process is gradual, focusing on treating issues like overgrown hooves and dental problems while carefully managing their weight gain and adjustment to a healthier lifestyle. Staff emphasize the importance of helping the horses feel secure and relaxed, allowing them to regain trust and confidence. With ongoing care and patience, the rescuers are hopeful that these horses will eventually find permanent, loving homes, marking a hopeful new chapter in their lives.
