Maine Equine Rescue Expands with New Intake Center and Unique Partnership Supporting Domestic Violence Survivors’ Horses

Three years ago, Peg Keyser of the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals (MSSPA) was inspired by a RedRover Foundation workshop focused on supporting domestic violence survivors and their companion animals. She raised the question of how horses could be included in such support, leading to a pioneering partnership between MSSPA, RedRover, Greater Good Charities, and Safe Voices—a domestic violence shelter in Maine. This collaboration enables Safe Voices to refer clients in need, allowing MSSPA to provide temporary sanctuary for horses owned by survivors, addressing a unique and previously unmet need.

This initiative coincides with MSSPA’s “A Safe Place to Land” capital campaign, funding a new intake and quarantine facility on their 124-acre property, designed to handle up to 25 horses with enhanced biosecurity and privacy features. The expansion responds to a growing demand, as MSSPA has seen an increase in horse seizures due to neglect and abuse, often involving multiple animals at once. Supported by grants and major donations like the McCulloch family’s $500,000 gift, the new facility aims to improve care efficiency and safety, offering a fresh start and hope for vulnerable horses in Maine and beyond.
