Magic Millions’ David Houston Bullish on WA Yearling Market Despite Industry Challenges

David Houston, Magic Millions’ Western Australia manager, remains optimistic about the Perth Yearling Sale despite challenges facing the WA racing industry, including a government review of Racing and Wagering Western Australia and recent controversies involving top trainers. Houston highlights the advantages of the local market, such as lower entry costs and lucrative Westspeed bonuses, which have helped boost trade to $20.62 million in 2024, a 47% increase since 2021. The rise of stallions like Playing God and new blood from Lightsaber, Aysar, and Marine One also support strong demand.

Despite industry uncertainties, Houston is confident that the upcoming sale, featuring 358 lots over two days at the Swan Valley complex, will attract competitive bidding from both local and interstate buyers, including notable racing and syndication groups. With a historical clearance rate of 85-90%, Houston expects robust participation and interest, underscoring the resilience and appeal of WA’s thoroughbred market. The sale begins Thursday at 11am WST, preceded by a traditional pre-sale event at Fraser’s Restaurant.
