Madras East Hills: A Premier Freeride Mountain Biking Destination in Central Oregon

Madras East Hills, located just east of Madras, Oregon, is a unique mountain biking destination known for its extensive freeride features such as wood structures, jumps, and berms, which are uncommon in Central Oregon due to land use restrictions on federal lands. The trail system, developed since 2019 by the Madras chapter of the Central Oregon Trail Alliance, offers 14 miles of biking trails and allows electric bikes, making climbs more accessible. Riders can enjoy varied terrain including treeless ridges with concrete berms and jumps, as well as trails like White Buffalo and Quarantine that feature multiple freeride elements, all set against scenic views of Cascade peaks.

Unlike many nearby trails that rely on natural features, Madras East Hills benefits from city and private land ownership, permitting man-made trail enhancements that create a distinctive freeride experience. The area remains rideable year-round, even when snow covers trails closer to Bend, and hosts the annual Bone Crusher XCO mountain bike race each April. Its proximity to Bend and diverse trail options make it a favored spot for riders seeking challenging climbs and thrilling descents in Central Oregon.
