Low-Profile Snow Sport Takes Center Stage at Skijoring Fundraiser in Fernie

The second annual skijoring fundraiser in Fernie featured horseback riders, skiers, and boarders racing through an obstacle course of berms and gates, with Francesca Ter Poorten and David Golls claiming first place in Division A. Ter Poorten, a local counselor, donated their $1,500 prize back to the non-profit hosting the event, Freedom Equine Association.

Ter Poorten’s quarter horse Freckles, known for his gentle yet energetic disposition, helped her and Golls secure their winning run. The event also featured participants in western attire and 80s-themed ski apparel, with an undercurrent of Canadian patriotism as the event coincided with the 60th anniversary of Canada’s flag.

Former Division A winners Sam Edge and Ryan Lindeman returned to the course, facing a more difficult track with tighter turns and larger berms. Lindeman noted the importance of balancing speed with control, as going too fast could be challenging for the skier to navigate the course.
