Lorain County Sheriff’s Office Adds First Horse to New Mounted Patrol Unit

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio has introduced its first horse to establish a mounted patrol unit aimed at enhancing law enforcement capabilities and community engagement. Mounted units offer distinct benefits such as improved visibility, access to challenging terrain, and fostering a more approachable presence, which supports stronger community policing efforts.

Acquired in April 2026, the horse will supplement traditional patrol methods by providing deputies with an elevated vantage point and better access to areas difficult for vehicles or foot patrols. The Sheriff’s Office plans to train more deputies to handle the horse, expanding the unit’s reach and reinforcing its commitment to personal interactions and community-oriented policing.
