London Fire Brigade Spends Over £1 Million on Cat Rescues Since 2023

Since the start of 2023, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) has spent over £1.8 million on animal rescues, with £1.1 million specifically dedicated to saving cats. Out of 3,766 rescues during this period, cats are the most frequently assisted animals, often found stuck in trees or other tricky situations due to their curious nature. Despite the high costs, many Londoners, including cat owners Ben Clarke and Helen Carrier, view these rescues as a necessary and relatively small expense given the importance of pets in society.

Animal rescues make up a small fraction (0.57%) of all emergency calls over the past six years, with boroughs like Enfield and Southwark recording the highest numbers. The LFB is well-trained in handling both large and small animal emergencies, sometimes using simple methods like treats to coax animals to safety. The brigade’s efforts are supported by organizations like the RSPCA, emphasizing public safety by preventing risky rescue attempts by untrained individuals. London’s strong pet ownership culture, with nearly half of homes having dogs or cats, underscores the ongoing need for such services.
