Local Equestrian Expert Urges Caution Amid Equine Herpes Virus Concerns

Lydia Juenger, an experienced equestrian professional from Fox Meadow Farm in Mill Spring, is urging horse owners in Polk County and nearby areas to exercise caution amid reports of an equine herpes virus (EHV) outbreak in other parts of the U.S. While no cases have been confirmed locally, Juenger highlights the risk posed by horse movement between states, especially given the virus’s contagious nature and potential severity. EHV, particularly strains EHV-1 and EHV-4, can cause respiratory illness, abortions in pregnant mares, and neurological issues, spreading through direct contact and contaminated equipment. Vaccines exist but do not fully prevent infection, making biosecurity and prevention critical.

Juenger has ceased participation in horse shows and restricts unfamiliar horses on her property as precautionary measures. She stresses the importance of horse owners consulting veterinarians for tailored advice and following standard outbreak protocols such as isolating new horses, disinfecting equipment, and monitoring health closely. Juenger warns that neglecting these precautions could disrupt local equestrian activities and harm the broader community, emphasizing that vigilance now is essential to protect the health and future of regional equine events.
