Local Caregivers Honored with 2025 White Horse Award for Compassion at Mountaineer Races

Chino Gudino, his son Luis Gudino, and Doug Adams from Mountaineer Casino Resort & Races are being honored with the Race Track Chaplaincy of America’s 2025 White Horse Award for their compassionate care of their friend Dennis VanMeter, a Vietnam veteran and horseman battling cancer. They transformed his tack room into a peaceful sanctuary and provided constant companionship, ensuring he could remain close to his horses during his final days. Their selfless dedication brought comfort, peace, and dignity to Dennis and his family, exemplifying the racing community’s core values of love, respect, and support.

The award, established in 2003 to recognize bravery and selflessness in the racing world, celebrates the extraordinary compassion shown by the Gudinos and Adams. A tribute video of their story premiered during Breeders’ Cup week, and they will be honored in person at Mountaineer Casino’s winner’s circle during a ceremony attended by co-workers, family, and friends. Their efforts not only uplifted those around them but also left a lasting legacy in memory of Dennis VanMeter, who passed away in September 2024.
