Local Animal Rescues Overwhelmed; Fundraiser and Shelter Solutions Urgently Needed

Local animal rescue organizations in Clallam County are overwhelmed with the number of unwanted, stray, and abandoned pets, operating at full capacity and relying heavily on community financial support. A fundraiser event on July 19 at the 3rd 4L arena Game Show/Animal Rescue Fundraiser aims to support groups like Welfare for Animals Guild (WAG) and Center Valley Animal Rescue. These nonprofits face challenges due to limited shelter space, especially after the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society (OPHS) closed its Bark House facility last year, leaving no county-contracted shelter to handle the influx of surrendered animals. The county’s Animal Solutions Advisory Committee is actively seeking solutions, including establishing a dedicated shelter with 24/7 crisis intake, kennel space for dangerous dogs, and resources for spay/neuter programs.

Community members and local veterinarians are stepping up to address the crisis through low-cost spay/neuter clinics and rescue efforts, but a long-term solution is needed. Advocates urge the county to build and operate a comprehensive shelter with medical facilities, licensing services, and educational outreach to better serve the animal population and public safety. Meanwhile, local events and fundraisers continue to support rescue groups and raise awareness, highlighting the ongoing need for community involvement and government action to manage animal welfare effectively.
