Liberty Sanctuary: Utah’s Largest Equine Rescue Advocating for Mustang Rehabilitation and Protection

Liberty Sanctuary in Heber City, founded by Debra West, is Utah’s largest horse rescue, specializing in rehabilitating wild and domestic horses, including mustangs and Indian reservation horses. The sanctuary emphasizes a patient, trust-based training approach that respects each horse’s individual pace, using natural horsemanship methods without traditional restraints. This environment, combined with intentional herd dynamics and experienced trainers like Searra Brandt, helps traumatized horses recover from fear and build lasting partnerships with humans. Liberty also carefully vets adopters to ensure horses find safe, permanent homes and will take horses back if needed.

Beyond rescue and rehabilitation, Liberty Sanctuary actively advocates against horse slaughter through education and legislative efforts, supporting the SAFE Act to ban American equine exports for slaughter. The sanctuary collaborates with national organizations and policymakers to raise awareness and promote adoption initiatives like Each Horse, Every Barn. As it seeks to expand its capacity and community involvement, Liberty hosts events and volunteer opportunities to engage the public in its mission to protect and restore the lives of horses across the country.
