Fabio Ochoa, a key operator of the Medellin cartel, has been deported back to Colombia after serving 25 years of a 30-year prison sentence in the U.S. Upon his arrival in Bogota, Ochoa was met by immigration officials and confirmed not to be wanted by Colombian authorities. He claimed he was framed and expressed relief that the nightmare was over, reuniting with his family.
Ochoa and his brothers made a fortune from cocaine trafficking in the late 1970s and 1980s, becoming billionaires and running a distribution center for the cartel once led by Pablo Escobar. Ochoa was first indicted in the U.S. for his role in the killing of an American pilot, but later became an informant for the DEA. He was extradited to the U.S. in 2001 and convicted of drug smuggling, serving most of his sentence before being deported back to Colombia.
Despite fading from popular memory, Ochoa has been depicted in Netflix series such as “Griselda” and “Narcos.” Authorities were never able to seize all of the Ochoa family’s illicit drug proceeds, and it is expected that he will not be retiring a poor man. Ochoa’s return home marks the end of a long legal battle and his reunion with his family in Medellin.
