The Lazy Sousa Ranch in Huson, Montana, has been a family-run operation since 1982, specializing in raising horses and cattle. Rancher Kate Sousa grew up immersed in this agricultural lifestyle, developing a lifelong passion for horses, especially Tennessee Walking Horses. Over the years, she has expanded the ranch’s focus to include Scottish Highland cattle, known for their distinctive appearance and suitability for small ranchettes. Sousa now manages about 25 horses and 50 Highland cows, raising animals that serve as pets, riding horses, and dairy cows, with many sold nationwide.
Sousa emphasizes the deep bonds formed with the animals she raises, describing the experience of training and caring for horses and cows as rewarding and personal. She enjoys teaching others through halter lessons and takes pride in preparing the next generation of animals for their new homes. Her dedication reflects a blend of tradition, passion, and hands-on care that defines the ranch’s ongoing legacy in Montana’s agricultural community.
