On Monday 10 March, CFA responded to a rescue call at 3:13 am on Chipperfield Drive in Moolap, where a 380kg horse was trapped in a deep mechanical pit full of water inside a shed it had gained access to. CFA and FRV crews attempted to use a wooden ramp to guide the horse out, but it was unsuccessful as the ramp was too steep for the horse to climb.
The Arthurs Creek Large Animal Rescue unit, one of only two CFA brigades in the state specializing in large animal rescue, was called in to assist. They built earth ramps for the horse to escape, and after about four hours, the horse was successfully rescued and deemed healthy. The unit members are all horse owners and receive specialized training from a UK trainer to maintain their skills.
Commander Gavin Fitzgerald highlighted the wide range of skills CFA volunteers possess, emphasizing their problem-solving abilities in challenging situations. The incident showcased the dedication and expertise of the CFA firefighters, particularly the young members who played a significant role in the successful rescue operation.
