Landaluce was an extraordinary 2-year-old filly in the early 1980s, renowned for her breathtaking speed and dominance on the racetrack. Trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas and sired by Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, she won all five of her races by a combined 46 ½ lengths, including a legendary 21-length victory in the Grade 2 Hollywood Lassie Stakes. Her brilliance earned her the Eclipse Award as the best 2-year-old filly of 1982, marking Lukas’ first champion and setting high expectations for her future.
Tragically, Landaluce’s promising career and life were cut short by a sudden and fatal viral illness, Colitis-X, which claimed her just before the richest filly race of the time, the Hollywood Starlet. Her death deeply affected Lukas, her connections, and the racing community, as she was not only a phenomenal athlete but also a valuable broodmare prospect. Landaluce’s legacy endures at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky, where she was reinterred after Hollywood Park’s closure, remembered as one of the sport’s most gifted and unforgettable champions.
